How times work

A time in a travel app is only worth as much as you know where it comes from. Here you can read where the times in Wissel come from, when we call them live and what we do not do.

Where the times come from

The timetable and the live times come from NDOV-loket: bus, tram and metro via OVapi, train positions and NS delays directly. We fetch the timetable again every day and the live data from OVapi every minute.

A delay or cancellation that you see has been passed on by the operator.

Live, scheduled or out of date

Every time shows what it is based on. There are three possibilities.

  1. Live

The operator passes on live times for this service and that data is less than 5 minutes old. Then you also see delays, cancellations and a different platform.

    The app says: live

  2. Scheduled

The operator does not pass on live times for this service. You see the timetable.

    The app says: scheduled

  3. Out of date

The live data is 5 minutes old or older. Then we apply no delays and show the timetable, with a bar at the top saying how old the live times are. We never show an out-of-date time as live.

The app says: scheduled, live data out of date

What it looks like

Live
08:24 Intercity, platform 5 live, 8 minutes later than scheduled
Scheduled
08:16 Intercity, platform 5 scheduled
Out of date

Live times are 12 minutes old. You are seeing the timetable.

08:16 Intercity, platform 5 scheduled, live data out of date

Example with a made-up journey, with the texts of the app.

Coverage and sources

Times
All operators that are in the NDOV data. Whether a service has live times is up to the operator. If it passes on no live times, you see the timetable and the app says so.
Addresses
We look up addresses at PDOK, the Kadaster's Locatieserver. Your search goes via our server to PDOK. Your location does not go there.
Map
The map comes from Apple Maps on the iPhone and from OpenFreeMap, with OpenStreetMap data, on Android.

What we do not do

What you do not find here, Wissel does not do.

  • No tickets and no paying with OV-chipkaart or OVpay.
  • No crowding information and no chance of a seat.
  • No shared transport, and only journeys in the Netherlands.
  • No real prices. The price of a journey is an estimate based on the travel time, not the operator’s fare.

System requirements

iPhone: iOS 26 or later. Android: Android 7.0 or later.
